The purpose of research is to gain a better understanding of how mentors and beginning teachers can benefit from professional opportunities that are offered through induction.
Methodology
We have chosen to conduct interviews with each other to
The methodology will be threefold and involve: researcher as subject interviews, research about current induction programs in different districts and academic research.
Limitations
Analysis of Data
Answering the research questions
Analysis of data will allow us to see the patterns and trends of how districts support beginning teachers. Our goal is to make recommendations for administrators, schools and district for designing and implementing successful induction programs. We know that new teachers need to be supported in their first years of teaching. This may include formal or informal supports.
What method(s) do you plan to use to gather evidence?
Ethnographic approach
Conduct interviews
Analysis of values and patterns
Detailed description of a culture sharing group (educators)
Interviews
Research into district documents
Investigating into academic research
Why are you choosing this approach?
Wanted to make finding more relevant, authentic and personally meaningful
To support our findings with lived experience
Use of district documents to better understand the resources that are available to new teachers
Practical and tangible evidence to our context
Use of academic research to support our investigation in how our systems are situated in current research
To enable ourselves to better support new teachers that we encounter
What are the limitations?
Personal experience with induction (bias)
We are looking at secondary teachers because we are all secondary teachers (bias)
Time for research
Limited scope of sample under investigation
Methodology (who we are interviewing, how interviewing)
Vast amount of literature in the field of research
How will you sort and analyze the data?
Code interviews and look for themes
Relate findings to district documentation and academic research
Interrogate your own experience against those described or promised in the literature
How will answer your research question?
Through recommendations on design, implementation, evaluation of teacher induction programs
